What next after Hyundai Buys Boston Dynamics for almost $1 Billion?

As we hurtled towards the end of 2020 it would have been easy to miss the news that robotic trail-blazer Boston Dynamics was scooped up by automotive giant Hyundai for a cool $1.1 billion. Where does this leave the company?

Evan Ackerman has pondered the future of Boston Dynamics corporate future on the fantastic IEEE Spectrum blog.

In it Evan breaks down Boston Dyanmics press release, which is filled with terms like “synergies” and “working together and looks at how the firm might leverage the technology to improve both its’ ‘smart mobility’ and manufacturing, logistics, construction and automation base.

However, the deal is interesting, as “it’s certainly not immediately obvious why the company wants to own 80 percent of Boston Dynamics” and Evan is left worrying that the deal might ultimately damage the “explicit funding for the kinds of radical ideas that eventually resulted in robots like Atlas and Spot”.
