This June, London’s Science Museum will be expanding its reach by opening a brand new Engineers Gallery.

The new gallery will be dedicated to some of the world’s most innovative technological achievements and their masterminds, this gallery seeks to obliterate common misconceptions about engineers with inspiring narratives from all walks of life.

Featuring stories from 60 different fields including robotics, farming, fashion and medicine – along with each engineer’s motivations behind their work – it is split into four sections: Bodies (focusing on drug delivery & surgery robots), Lives (illustrating sustainable engineering practices), Connections (representing diverse teams) and Creativity (highlighting imagination).

The gallery itself will feature cutting-edge robotic arms, groundbreaking digital cameras, and foundational atomic clocks that underpin GPS technology across the globe.

Exhibits will draw on innovations recognized through the the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering (QEPrize), which are a major funder of the exhibition and the world’s leading award for engineers.

Science Museum director Sir Ian Blatchford explained to imeche.org that “everyday life depends on the skills and creativity of engineers. In bringing this fabulous new gallery to life, we’re delighted to be working with the QEPrize, whose recognition of some of the most brilliant minds and important innovations of our time is so vital. I know our many visitors will be inspired by the stories they will encounter”

We hope that for young people feeling disconnected from engineering, this new gallery will offer them an exciting and informative way to explore the potential of this powerful field.

It’s only through engaging exhibits that visitors can glimpse what’s possible in today’s ever-evolving world of engineering innovation.

The gallery will open in the Wellcome Wing, Level 3 at Science Museum on Friday 23 June 2023.
