We are delighted to share the first in a brand new series of Born to Engineer video! In our new series of videos we are looking at, and talking about, the realities of modern Engineering careers.
Our first video features Civil Engineer Mimi-Isabella asking … can engineers fix everything? Do you have to be a genius to become an engineer? Are all engineers boring white guys?
Mimi is a Assistant Materials Engineer at Sir Robert McAlpine where she studies different materials used on the building projects.
In 2018 she completed her degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Portsmouth and after taking her placement year she knew that she wanted to work in the varied and challenging field of construction.
Her work involves looking at everything from wood to sand. Her day-to-day see’s her conducting laboratory experiments on materials; checking the current status of the material; if it is good enough for a project; and is up to standard. Alongside side this she looks at the waste materials involved in the projects to try to ensure materials are not wasted and will be sustainable for the future.
Mimi-Isabella was nominated as one of the ‘Top 500 most inspiring and influential people in the UK’s construction industry’ at The London Build Expo 2019 and was also awarded the role of a ‘Diversity in Construction ambassador’.
