Portsmouth apprentices win competition to design ‘grabber’ for injured soldiers

A team of apprentices working for BAE Systems has won the company’s Apprentice Innovation Challenge by developing an innovative new grabber device, which makes it easier for people with limited movement to pick up objects. The challenge, run by BAE in collaboration with The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, was to design, create and test an improved grabber in only nine months. Team Portsmouth beat seven other groups of apprentices to win the challenge; one of its members, Lewis Hall, said that they were “truly humbled and utterly shocked that the judges decided we were the winning team.”
