Elon Musk is best known for work with SpaceX and Tesla – but his latest venture launched in late 2016. “The Boring Company” aim to “solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic” by creating cheap new tunnel networks.

In his latest Instagram video Elon Musk shows off the first “test run of [his] electric sled that would transport cars at 125 mph (200 km/h) through the tunnels, automatically switching from one tunnel to the next.” He explained that this “[c]ould mean Westwood to LAX in 5 mins”.

The first tunnel was created between SpaceX offices in LA. The company used the site as digging between the offices requires no permits. That initial tunnel is thought to be 30 foot wide, 50 foot long, and 15 foot deep.

Musk has stated he wants to create an initial route between LAX and Culver City. Before expanding the project to Santa Monica and end in Westwood.

He claims the tunnel trip will take five minutes, compared to normal driving that can take up to 45 minutes in normal traffic to go from LAX to Westwood. These fast trips would be possible by placing a car on an electric sledge and travelling at 125 mph (200 km/h) through tunnels.
