Stem cells from humans have been transformed into kidney tissue, in a crucial development in the effort to grow human organs. The scientists in Australia made the breakthrough by growing “organoids”, which are similar to the kidneys of a young baby. Importantly, they have collecting ducts and filtering units called nephons, which means they could be used to fulfill some of the kidney’s key functions.
