EU provides €5m in funding for world’s largest telescope

Horizon 2020, the European Union’s research and innovation programme, has given €5 million in funds to help build a giant radio telescope. The Square Kilometre Array project is an international collaboration to build two massive radio arrays, situated in Australia and South Africa, and the latest funds add to existing investments totalling €150 million. Simon Berry, director of policy development at the SKA global headquarters in Cheshire, said it was “excellent news” and would allow for the completion of design activities that will mean that “companies and communities in Europe and around the world within our member countries will be poised to benefit.”
