Record-breaking £265bn invested in renewable energy last year

More money was invested in renewables in 2015 than was invested in building new fossil fuel power plants, a report by Clean Energy Canada has revealed. Falling technology costs have led to record investments in wind and solar power generation, and in the UK, despite cuts to subsidies, renewables attracted £17bn in investment during 2015. Merran Smith, Clean Energy Canada’s executive director, said: “Clean energy is taking off because it offers value that can’t be beat – it’s local, so it offers energy security. It’s a climate solution. It reduces health issues from smog. It’s increasingly competitive, and there’s big money to be made.”
