NASA have announced designs for a supersonic ‘X-plane’, as part of an initiative seeking to build jets which are faster, quieter and more efficient. The QUESST design, to be developed by Lockheed Martin, is for a ‘low boom’ supersonic jet, which will not make the loud sonic boom usually associated with supersonic travel. Nasa Administrator Charles Bolden said: “Nasa is working hard to make flight greener, safer and quieter – all while developing aircraft that travel faster, and building an aviation system that operates more efficiently.”
