Google’s AlphaGo artificial intelligence program has defeated the world champion of Go, a complex Chinese board game. The program, developed by Google’s DeepMind artificial intelligence company, won the historic match against South Korean Lee Sedol, the world first-ranking Go player who has dominated Go world competitions for the last decade. The significance of this defeat was noted by Chris Garlock, one of the match’s commentators, who said: “This is history, you saw it folks.”
