German engineers develop self-monitoring intelligent motors

24 March 2016

Researchers from Saarland University in Germany are developing intelligent motor systems which bypass the need for additional sensors by acting as their own multifunctional sensors. The team, led by drive systems specialist Professor Matthias Nienhaus, have analysed measurements of the magnetic field generated in the motor to gain information about the status of the motor, with this technique also allowing the motor to communicate with others in related systems. Neinhaus commented: “We’re looking at elegant ways of extracting data from the motor and of using this data for motor control and for monitoring and managing processes.”
