Ford installs laser sensors in its driverless cars

Ford is equipping its self-driving cars with LiDAR sensors, laser scanners which allow cars to create high resolution 3D maps of their surroundings. This allows the vehicles to locate themselves to within a centimetre, far more accurate than locating using GPS. The scanners are so precise that they can detect individual raindrops and snowflakes, meaning that Ford have had to develop an algorithm to allow the car to filter precipitation out of its vision.
