Our editorial team and standards

Born to Engineer is a free guide to becoming an engineer in the UK, for students aged 14 to 18, their parents and their teachers. It is written and checked by the Born to Engineer editorial team, and is a campaign of the ERA Foundation.

How we choose what to publish

We cover what helps a young person decide whether engineering is for them, and how to get there: the branches of engineering, the routes in, the subjects to take, work experience, scholarships and funding, and engineering news that shows what engineers actually do. We write in plain English for readers aged 14 to 18 and the adults who support them.

Our main sources are GOV.UK and the Department for Education, UCAS, the professional engineering institutions, universities, employers and the organisations that run each scheme.

How we check our facts

Salaries, fees, deadlines, entry grades and statistics on the site are footnoted with their source. Hover over or tap a footnote number to see the source, when we checked it and the words from it that back up the figure.

Sources are primary wherever possible: GOV.UK and the Department for Education, UCAS, the professional engineering institutions, universities’ own entry pages, the official pages of each scholarship and scheme, Prospects, HESA and the ONS. Where a figure comes from an employer or a survey, the footnote says so.

Each source records when it was last checked. Any source not checked for 12 months is flagged for us to check again, and pages show when they were last reviewed. When a source changes, we correct the page; when a scheme closes or a claim can no longer be backed up, it comes off the page rather than staying unsourced.

Our partners

Born to Engineer is a campaign of the ERA Foundation. Anything we publish about organisations we work with is checked in the same way as everything else.

Corrections and contact

If you spot a mistake, or a figure that has changed, tell us through the contact page. We correct errors as soon as we have confirmed them, and update the date the page was last checked.
