Engineering YouTube channel · Featured
Short films about British engineers and how they got there, from a jet suit pilot to a dad who built his son a prosthetic arm. A good first look at what engineers really do.

Born to Engineer is the YouTube home of this site’s own film series. The channel describes engineering as an art form, where you use your imagination to solve a problem, innovate and create. It aims to inspire young people to become the engineering stars of the future, and invites viewers to meet some of Britain’s brightest engineers and decide: were you born to engineer?
Each film follows one engineer, showing their work and the story of how they got into it. The playlists include the full Born to Engineer films and a Women in Engineering collection. Later videos include an Engineering Myth vs Reality series and an engineering roundtable.
Some highlights include:
Ben Ryan, who learnt product design and engineering skills to build a 3D printed hydraulic prosthetic for his son, Sol, and then started a company to make affordable prosthetics for children.

Richard Browning, founder and chief test pilot of Gravity Industries, on designing and building a body-controlled flight suit.

Orla Murphy, a Jaguar Land Rover engineer working on ways to update the software in a vehicle remotely, wherever it is in the world.

Born to Engineer has over 1,700 subscribers.
The films are short and personal, a good first step for anyone unsure what an engineer actually does. The same films appear on this site with more about each engineer’s route.
