Advice to government on engineering skills
The Perkins’ Review is the most thoughtful and thorough analysis of the engineering skills needs of the nation produced for some considerable time. The majority of its recommendations are being taken forward, and it represents a call for action which all engineering professional bodies need to get behind.
The review endorses the widely accepted view that substantially increasing the supply of engineers entering the labour market would benefit the UK economy. This would help the economy to be more flexible and resilient, and enable more people to take up new opportunities that technological change presents.
The review includes 22 recommendations for action by government, industry, the engineering profession, and the education sector. We must inspire young people throughout their education. We must also improve the engineering skills supply system to help to develop the types of engineer which current and future industries need
