.The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is a world leading professional members’ organisation, which promotes the exchange of information and ideas for the advancement of science, engineering and technology worldwide.

It has nearly 160,000 members in 127 countries worldwide, representing professional engineers and technicians from industry, business and academia. The IET’s members come from across the UK and global engineering communities, particularly in the sectors of:

  • Transport
  • Built environment
  • Design and Production

The IET provides its members with a ‘Professional Home for Life®’ – a range of professional services and products that support members throughout their career.

The Institution has a very strong programme for school and college students, their teachers and parents. It is designed to improve their understanding of engineering; develop their practical and employability skills; enable students to make informed course and career choices; and, to enable teachers to deliver their subjects in an engineering context.

The IET’s programme includes:

For teachers:

  • Free teaching resources for secondary teachers of Science, Maths, Design & Technology and Computing
  • Challenges and competitions for inspiration and skills development, including:

o   Free IET Faraday Challenge Days

o   FIRST® LEGO® League

  • Volunteer STEM Ambassadors who can support school’s teaching and learning activities
  • Grant funding for educational projects
  • Careers information
  • Teacher CPD through partner organisation such as the ASE, Design & Technology Association and the National Science Learning Centre

For students:

The IET also works to influence education policy. Amongst other work it produces an annual report into the demand for engineering skills and qualifications
