Shipwrights’ Apprenticeship Scheme
The Shipwrights’ Apprenticeship Scheme is run by the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights to encourage small to medium employers to engage with apprenticeship training is into its second year of supporting marine businesses.
The Lloyds Register Foundation (LRF) is currently helping 18 employers, all of whom are new to apprentice training, in various parts of the country and across different marine sectors; the range includes a small GRP boat builder on the Isle of Wight to inland waterways yards in Cheshire and from a traditional yard in Totnes to an offshore lift gear
manufacturer in Hull.
The LRF funding pays the first year wages of these initial apprentices in order to enable the business to completely mitigate the perceived risk of taking a young person into training and employment.
The scheme also helps each company through the initial stages of setting up the apprenticeship training programme and offers ongoing advice and guidance on mentoring the apprentice.
